EPA to Volkswagen: release Dieselgate recall plan before deadline or face billions in fines

The head of Volkswagen’s U.S. division revealed that the company would soon make public its plans to fix problems with VW and Audi diesel models involved in the Dieselgate emissions scandal. Volkswagen Group of America chief executive Michael Horn made the announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the German automaker’s first North American auto show since news of the emissions cheating scandal broke earlier this year. EPA, California regulators reject Volkswagen diesel recall plan over failure to address emissions problems

The Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have rejected a proposal from Volkswagen to recall 2-liter diesel-powered VW and Audi models sold between 2009 and 2015. In a press release, CARB stated that Volkswagen would need to address key underlying emissions issues with the 2009-2015 models before the agency would approve a plan by the company to recall the “TDI Clean Diesel” models involved in the emissions cheating scandal. Judge in Dieselgate MDL, Volkswagen attorneys want speedy resolution to emissions cheating lawsuits

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer, who is overseeing more than 500 lawsuits against Volkswagen in California federal court involving the diesel emissions cheating scandal, says that he would like to resolve the cases quickly because of the 500,000 VW and Audi owners who face an “immediate problem” with their vehicles. Attorneys representing Volkswagen in the MDL have also stated that they would like to resolve the lawsuits against the German automaker as quickly as possible. (more…)
